📜 History
The Green Ghost appears in the 1937 Café Royal Cocktail Book (Coronation Edition), the influential compendium published by the United Kingdom Bartenders Guild in London. The recipe is attributed to bartender J.B. Hurrell, and it is one of the earliest documented cocktails to use green Chartreuse as a primary ingredient rather than as a mere accent. In proportions, it closely resembles the Last Word but without maraschino liqueur and with the gin increased to a dominant 2:1 ratio over the Chartreuse. This shifts the flavor profile toward a drier, more gin-forward expression, with the Chartreuse adding herbal depth and the lime providing citrus brightness. The drink was rediscovered alongside the broader Last Word revival of the late 2000s.
