History & Origin

The Honey Bourbon Shot draws on one of American whiskey's most natural flavor partnerships — the connection between bourbon's barrel-derived sweetness and actual honey — in the simplest possible format. Bourbon's character is shaped fundamentally by the new charred American white oak barrel in which it must be aged: the charring creates a caramel layer from which sugar compounds are slowly extracted into the spirit, while the oak's vanillin, lactones, and other wood congeners contribute vanilla, coconut, and honey-like aromatics. These compounds are genuinely similar in chemical structure to the aromatic compounds found in honey itself, which is why the combination tastes like a deepening of the spirit's own nature rather than an external addition. The commercial honey whiskey category in the United States expanded substantially in the 2000s and 2010s as distillers recognized that the honey-bourbon pairing had broad consumer appeal: Wild Turkey American Honey, Jim Beam's Honey, Evan Williams Honey, and Jack Daniel's Tennessee Honey all launched during this period and collectively introduced millions of consumers to the combination. The craft cocktail approach to the honey bourbon shot differs from these pre-mixed products by using a quality straight bourbon and freshly made honey syrup — dissolving high-quality honey in warm water — to produce a shot whose sweetness is more nuanced and whose spirit character is more present than the commercial liqueur versions.
