History & Origin

The Hot Toddy is among the oldest continuously documented cold-weather cocktails in the English-speaking world, with written references appearing in British and American household guides and medical texts from the 18th century onward as both a warming social drink and a domestic cold remedy. The format — distilled spirit, hot water, sweetener (typically honey or sugar), and aromatic additions including lemon juice, cloves, cinnamon, and star anise — provides genuine subjective relief through several mechanisms: the steam's decongestant vapors, honey's throat-soothing properties, lemon's vitamin C, and the psychological comfort of warmth. Both Scotland and Ireland claim the Hot Toddy's invention, with Scotch whisky's association with the format in British culture making the Scottish claim most widely associated internationally. The American version evolved through the 18th and 19th centuries using the domestically produced bourbon and rye whiskeys of the frontier and plantation economy. Today the Hot Toddy appears on winter menus across American, British, Irish, and European bars and remains one of the most recognizable seasonal cocktails in the global repertoire.
