The Incredible Hulk Shot is a 21st-century novelty cocktail built around one of the most commercially significant cognac marketing developments of the early 2000s — the emergence of Hennessy as a prominent cultural symbol in American hip-hop music and nightclub culture. Hennessy, produced in Cognac, France by the house founded by Richard Hennessy in 1765 and now owned by LVMH as part of the Moët Hennessy wine and spirits division, had been the world's largest cognac producer by volume since the 19th century. Its association with African American music and culture through the late 1990s and early 2000s was documented across hundreds of song references in rap and R&B, making the brand a cultural signifier in ways no other cognac had achieved. Hpnotiq, launched in the United States in 2001 by founder Raphael Yakoby and later acquired by Heaven Hill Distilleries, is a light blue liqueur made from a blend of tropical fruit juices, premium vodka, and a measure of cognac, produced in France. Its vivid blue color — produced by food-grade coloring — made it an instant visual phenomenon in nightclub culture. When the amber of cognac is combined with the blue of Hpnotiq in equal parts, the mixture produces a bright green color that visually references the Incredible Hulk, the Marvel Comics character created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby, first appearing in The Incredible Hulk #1 in May 1962.
