History & Origin

The Jägerbomb is a bomb shot combining Jägermeister herbal liqueur dropped into a glass of Red Bull energy drink — a combination that became one of the defining drinks of early 21st-century nightclub culture globally. Jägermeister was created in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony in 1934 by Curt Mast, the son of Wilhelm Mast who owned a vinegar and spirits business, combining 56 herbs, fruits, roots, and spices in a formula that was originally positioned as a hunting lodge digestif and stomach remedy. The spirit's American marketing transformation was engineered by Sidney Frank Importing Company from the late 1980s onward through unconventional promotional tactics including teams of young promoters buying rounds in bars and the introduction of refrigerated Jägermeister dispensers. Red Bull, created by Austrian entrepreneur Dietrich Mateschitz in collaboration with Thai businessman Chaleo Yoovidhya based on the Thai energy drink Krating Daeng, was launched in Austria in 1987 and introduced to the United States market in 1997. Red Bull's US launch created the energy drink cocktail category, and the combination of its caffeine, taurine, and B-vitamin formulation with Jägermeister's herbal intensity produced a drink that nightclub culture adopted enthusiastically from the late 1990s onward. The Jägerbomb's commercial success reflected both brands' aggressive bar marketing and the era's appetite for intensely stimulating, quick-consumption formats.
