History & Origin

The Maiden's Prayer appeared in Harry Craddock's The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), the most authoritative cocktail manual of the inter-war period, published during Craddock's tenure as head bartender at the American Bar in the Savoy Hotel. The American Bar, which had operated at the Savoy since 1898, was the most celebrated cocktail bar in Britain and attracted a cosmopolitan clientele of theatrical figures, politicians, royalty, and American expatriates who kept London's bar scene connected to transatlantic cocktail culture throughout the Prohibition years. The Maiden's Prayer's formula — gin, triple sec, orange juice, and lemon juice — is a bright, citrus-forward aperitif whose multiple citrus elements (orange from the triple sec, orange juice, and lemon juice alongside the gin's botanical citrus) create a drink of layered complexity within a simple structure. Triple sec, the clear orange liqueur category most commercially associated with Cointreau (produced in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou since 1875), became the standard French orange liqueur used in London and Paris bar culture through the 1920s. The Savoy Cocktail Book documented over 750 recipes, and the Maiden's Prayer was among those whose citrus-and-gin formula reflected the era's preference for accessible, fruit-forward drinks that showcased London Dry gin's botanical complexity without demanding prior familiarity with spirit-forward preparations.
