📜 History
Hot toddies have served as a warming remedy since at least the 18th century, when the combination of whisky, honey, lemon, and hot water was prescribed for colds and cold nights alike. The classic formula remains unchanged in its essentials, though virtually every spirit has been adapted to the toddy template over time. The mezcal hot toddy gained a following in craft cocktail bars during mezcal's rise in the 2010s, where bartenders discovered that the spirit's smoke adds a campfire warmth that whiskey cannot replicate. It has since become a seasonal staple at agave-focused bars and is especially well-suited to fall and winter evenings.
