History & Origin

The Mini Martini emerged from the broader modern craft cocktail movement's exploration of format, temperature, and presentation — particularly the question of whether a smaller serving of a great cocktail, consumed at its optimal cold temperature before any dilution occurs, might be a more satisfying experience than a standard measure that warms and dilutes over the course of drinking. The Tayēr + Elementary bar in London, opened by Monica Berg and Alex Kratena on Old Street in 2019 and immediately recognized as one of the most innovative bar openings in the city's recent history, was among the establishments that developed and championed the mini Martini concept as a deliberate service philosophy. Berg and Kratena had previously been part of the team at Artesian at the Langham Hotel, which was named the World's Best Bar four consecutive times by the World's 50 Best Bars awards. The mini Martini addresses a practical problem with the standard preparation: a full Martini begins to warm and dilute within minutes of service, and drinkers who consume it slowly experience a progressively less ideal drink. A smaller measure — consumed in two or three sips — maintains optimal temperature and dilution from first sip to last. The format spread through the cocktail bar community through the early 2020s, appearing on menus at quality bars worldwide.
