📜 History
The Gin & Tonic was born in British India during the mid-1800s, when British soldiers mixed quinine-based tonic with gin to make malaria medicine more palatable. Schweppes launched the first commercial carbonated quinine tonic water in 1870, branded as Indian Tonic Water. The drink spread globally and became a cornerstone of British drinking culture. The non-alcoholic version came of age after 2015, when Seedlip's launch proved that a distilled botanical spirit without alcohol could anchor a sophisticated mixed drink. By the early 2020s, non-alcoholic gin alternatives from brands like Ritual Zero Proof, Monday Gin, Tanqueray 0.0%, and Ceder's gave home bartenders and restaurants a growing toolkit for building a G&T that is indistinguishable in form — if not in spirit — from the original.
