History & Origin

The Orange Cream Fizz extends the classic Gin Fizz template by adding cream, producing a drink whose combination of orange and dairy creates a flavor impression widely associated in American culture with the Creamsicle — the frozen confection of orange-flavored ice encasing vanilla ice cream introduced by Jack Epperson in 1905 in Youngstown, Ohio and commercially produced as the Creamsicle by Popsicle Industries from the 1930s onward. The Gin Fizz itself was one of the defining cocktail categories of late 19th and early 20th-century American bartending, with the Ramos Gin Fizz — Henry Charles Ramos's 1888 New Orleans creation combining gin, lemon and lime juice, egg white, cream, orange flower water, and soda water — representing the category's most elaborate and celebrated cream-enriched expression. The Orange Cream Fizz connects the standard Fizz's effervescent citrus-and-spirit structure to the Ramos tradition's cream enrichment, substituting orange juice for the lemon-and-lime combination and using the cream float rather than the emulsified incorporation of the Ramos. Orange flower water, used in the Ramos Gin Fizz, bridges the gap between the two preparations: its floral, honeyed orange aroma connects the orange citrus of the modern version to the historical Louisiana original.
