History & Origin

Painkiller Punch is the large-format adaptation of one of the most commercially significant beach bar cocktails in the Caribbean — the Painkiller, created at the Soggy Dollar Bar on White Bay, Jost Van Dyke, British Virgin Islands. The Soggy Dollar Bar, which takes its name from the wet currency customers carry ashore after swimming from anchored boats (the bar has no dock), was operated by Daphne Henderson when the Painkiller was developed there in the 1970s. The formula — Pusser's rum, pineapple juice, orange juice, and cream of coconut — combines four broadly available ingredients in a proportional balance that produces a rich, creamy tropical drink whose sweetness and dairy weight make it filling as well as refreshing. Pusser's rum, produced from a recipe based on the British Royal Navy's daily rum ration (pusser's is sailor's slang for purser, the naval officer responsible for provisions including the rum ration), acquired the rights to the Painkiller name and trademark and registered it for commercial protection, making the Painkiller legally required to use Pusser's rum in the trademarked version. The punch format scales the Painkiller's four components proportionally for group service, maintaining the drink's defining creaminess from the cream of coconut through a pre-batched mixing approach.
