The Purple People Eater Jello Shot takes its name from Sheb Wooley's novelty song "Purple People Eater," which reached number one on the Billboard pop charts in 1958 and became one of the most recognized novelty hits of the rock and roll era. The purple extraterrestrial character of the song — a one-eyed, one-horned flying creature — inspired the vivid purple color of the jello shot, typically achieved using grape-flavored gelatin or a combination of raspberry gelatin with blue curacao. The shot became popular at Halloween parties for its whimsical monster theme and at 1950s-themed events where the song reference resonated. Its sweet grape or berry flavor and visually dramatic purple color made it a reliable crowd-pleasing party contribution.
