Pussyfoot

OJ, lemon, grenadine, and egg yolk — named for temperance crusader Pussyfoot Johnson, a pleasant Prohibition-era craft mocktail presumably as an intentional irony.

History & Origin

The Pussyfoot is one of a small group of original non-alcoholic cocktails designed from the ground up as independent drinks rather than as spirit-removed variations of existing cocktails. The drink was reportedly created by Robert Vermeijer and named for William "Pussyfoot" Johnson, the American prohibition activist and anti-alcohol crusader who campaigned globally against drinking throughout the 1910s and 1920s, earning the nickname for his cat-like stealth in pursuing illegal liquor operations. The irony of a pleasantly complex non-alcoholic cocktail being named after a temperance campaigner was presumably intentional. The Pussyfoot combines orange juice, lemon juice, grenadine, and egg yolk into a silky, citrus-forward mocktail with the creamy body that the egg provides — a genuine craft non-alcoholic drink from the Prohibition era.
