History & Origin

The Sangria Jello Shot adapts Spain's most internationally recognized wine preparation into gelatin shooter form, translating the fruited red wine punch's color and flavor into a party-appropriate set format. Sangria — whose name derives from the Spanish sangre (blood), referencing the traditional red wine version's color — has been made on the Iberian Peninsula for centuries, combining wine with seasonal fruit, sugar, brandy or other spirits, and sometimes citrus juice or sparkling water. The drink achieved its first major international exposure at the 1964 World's Fair in New York City, held in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, where the Spanish pavilion's sangria service introduced the preparation to millions of American visitors and generated significant commercial interest. The subsequent American sangria market developed through Spanish restaurants and then mainstream retail as bottled sangria products appeared. The Sangria Jello Shot adapts the red wine, citrus, and fruit flavors into a gelatin base — typically using red grape juice or light red wine alongside brandy and fruit-flavored gelatin mix — for a set shooter whose deep red color and fruity flavor captures the original's essential identity.
