History & Origin

The Ti Punch Brasileiro bridges two sugarcane-distilling traditions separated by an ocean but united by a shared raw material. The Ti Punch itself is the national cocktail of Martinique and Guadeloupe in the French Caribbean, where the first printed recipe appears in Lafcadio Hearn's 1890 travelogue Two Years in the French West Indies. The name is a Creole contraction of petit punch — small punch — and the drink is made with just three ingredients: rhum agricole, fresh lime, and cane syrup, traditionally swizzled in a small glass with a bois lélé, a natural swizzle stick carved from the wood of the Quararibea turbinata tree. The defining feature of rhum agricole — French Caribbean rum distilled directly from fresh sugarcane juice rather than molasses — is its grassy, vegetal freshness: a quality it shares with cachaça, Brazil's national spirit, which has also been distilled from fresh sugarcane juice since Portuguese colonists introduced the practice in the 16th century. That botanical kinship makes the substitution a natural one rather than an arbitrary swap. Both spirits carry the raw green energy of the cane plant, both have higher aromatic complexity than molasses-based rum, and both are built for spirit-forward drinks that reward attention rather than dilution. The Ti Punch Brasileiro honors the Caribbean framework while centering the flavors of the country that gave the world cachaça.
