History & Origin

The Twix Shot belongs to the candy-bar shooter genre that spread through American bars in the late 1990s and 2000s, when bartenders used the growing range of flavoured liqueurs to mimic popular confections. The Twix bar itself - made by Mars, sold in the UK from 1967 (originally as the Raider) and launched in the United States in 1979 - layers biscuit, caramel and milk chocolate. The shooter approximates that profile with butterscotch schnapps for the caramel, hazelnut liqueur such as Frangelico for the biscuity, cocoa-edged note, and Irish cream for dairy richness; a chocolate-syrup rim stands in for the chocolate coating. Recipes for the shot are documented consistently with this butterscotch-hazelnut-cream base rather than any single authoritative source, and the drink is typically shaken with ice and strained rather than layered.
