The Apple Cart is an American apple brandy sour whose formula applies the Sidecar's cognac-Cointreau-lemon structure to applejack, producing a distinctly American variation on one of the 1920s most influential cocktail templates. The Sidecar was documented in European bartending guides from 1922 onward; the Apple Cart adapted it for the American market using the country's own traditional apple spirit. Laird's Applejack is the most historically significant American apple brandy, produced by the Laird family in Scobeyville, New Jersey — family records document Robert Laird distilling applejack as early as 1698, and he supplied apple brandy to George Washington's troops. The commercial distillery received its federal license in 1780, making Laird's the oldest licensed domestic distillery in the United States. New Jersey's apple orchards and the colonial tradition of hard cider and applejack production made the state the center of American apple spirit culture for over two centuries. Cointreau, produced by the Cointreau family in Saint-Barthélemy-d'Anjou in France since 1875, provides the orange liqueur element. The combination of apple brandy's fruit-and-barrel warmth with Cointreau's orange and lemon juice's acid produces a cocktail with more aromatic complexity than the standard Sidecar, the apple's fruit character adding a layer between the citrus and the spirit.
