The Old Fashioned is among the oldest named American cocktails, with the format of spirit, sugar, bitters, and a small measure of water documented in print from the early 19th century. The term Old Fashioned as a cocktail name emerged in the 1880s, when bars began labeling the traditional two-ingredient whiskey-and-bitters preparation as the old-fashioned way to make a cocktail, distinguishing it from the proliferating new drinks that added liqueurs, citrus, and carbonation. The simple elegance of the format — spirit slightly sweetened and gently aromatic — makes it one of the most structurally pure vehicles for showcasing a distilled spirit's character without overlay. Aquavit, produced in Scandinavia since at least the 15th century and taking its name from the Latin aqua vitae (water of life), works in the Old Fashioned framework because it shares rye whiskey's grain-forward assertiveness while replacing oak-derived caramel and pepper with the caraway and dill botanicals that define the spirit's character. Norwegian aquavit — typically aged in oak barrels, often previously used for sherry or bourbon — has enough barrel complexity to perform the structural role that aged whiskey plays in the classic. The Angostura bitters that typically anchor the Old Fashioned formula interact with caraway's earthy spice in a genuinely complementary rather than competing way, and the small sugar addition provides the same moderating function it performs with rye.
