Instructions

  1. Add simple syrup and Angostura bitters to a mixing glass.
  2. Add aquavit and fill the mixing glass with ice.
  3. Stir for 20 to 30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass over a large ice sphere.
  5. Express an orange peel over the glass and place it as garnish.

The Old Fashioned is among the oldest cocktail templates on record, dating to the early nineteenth century as simply spirit, sweetener, water, and bitters. Aquavit producers in Scandinavia and craft distilleries in the United States began promoting the format as an ideal showcase for aged and unaged aquavit, whose herbal complexity performs similarly to rye whiskey in a spirit-forward stirred drink.
