History & Origin

The Bob Marley shot layers three colors in deliberate homage to the flag and spiritual symbolism of Rastafari. Robert Nesta Marley (1945–1981) was born in Nine Mile, Saint Ann Parish, Jamaica, and became the most globally recognized artist in reggae — a genre he helped define through albums including Catch a Fire, Natty Dread, Rastaman Vibration, and Exodus, the last of which Time Magazine named the greatest album of the 20th century. Marley was a devoted adherent of the Rastafari movement, a Jamaican spiritual tradition that emerged in the 1930s drawing on Pan-Africanism, the teachings of Marcus Garvey, and veneration of Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia as a divine figure. The movement's canonical colors — red, gold or yellow, and green — derive from the Ethiopian flag and carry specific symbolic meaning: red for the blood of Africans martyred by colonialism and oppression, gold for the mineral wealth of Africa, and green for the lush vegetation and beauty of the promised land of Ethiopia. These three colors appear across Rastafari iconography, reggae artwork, and became internationally associated with Marley and his cultural legacy. The shot recreates the flag's color sequence in liquid form by layering grenadine at the base, a yellow citrus liqueur in the middle, and Midori melon liqueur on top, requiring the technique of pouring each layer slowly over a spoon to keep them visually distinct.
