History & Origin

The Brandy Manhattan is historically plausible in a way that the term variation does not fully capture: early Manhattan recipes from the 1880s and 1890s were made with brandy as readily as with whiskey, and the distinction between the two was not always meaningful to contemporary drinkers. The Manhattan's origin is traced to New York City in the early 1880s, with multiple competing accounts placing its creation at the Manhattan Club, at various hotel bars, and through the agency of various bartenders. The earliest published recipes appeared in 1884 in O.H. Byron's The Modern Bartender's Guide and in William Schmidt's cocktail manuals of the same era. These early recipes specified whiskey but often noted brandy as an acceptable alternative, and Harry Johnson's 1882 Bartenders' Manual included brandy versions explicitly. Brandy's structural compatibility with the Manhattan framework is genuine: like aged American whiskey, cognac carries fruit character, barrel-derived complexity, and enough spirit weight to hold its own against sweet vermouth's sugar and herbal aromatics. The difference between a Brandy Manhattan and the standard whiskey version is one of character — cognac brings dried apricot, oak, and grape distillate fruit where bourbon or rye brings grain and American oak — rather than one of structural incompatibility.
