The Churchill cocktail was created by legendary bartender Joe Gilmore during his tenure at The American Bar in London's Savoy Hotel. First published in 1939 in Esquire magazine, the drink honors two-time British Prime Minister Winston Churchill, whose preferred spirit was Scotch whisky. Gilmore specifically called for Cointreau in his original recipe. Ironically, Churchill himself rarely drank cocktails, preferring his Scotch heavily watered down. When presented with the drink, Churchill reportedly gifted Gilmore one of his Cuban cigars.
