The Cosmopolitan's origin involves competing claims: cocktail historians credit Cheryl Cook, a Miami bartender, with creating the first version using vodka, cranberry juice, and citrus liqueur in the mid-1980s, while Toby Cecchini at the Odeon bar in New York refined it with fresh lime juice and Cointreau around 1988. The Cosmopolitan's defining cultural moment came through the HBO series Sex and the City (1998-2004), in which Carrie Bradshaw and her friends ordered Cosmos as their signature drink — a symbol of female urban sophistication and Manhattan social confidence. The show's global reach created a Cosmopolitan renaissance, making it the most ordered cocktail at upscale American bars during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It remains one of the canonical vodka cocktails and a reference point for the entire flavored-vodka cocktail era.
