The Dark 'n' Stormy is the national cocktail of Bermuda and the only cocktail in the world whose name is a registered trademark specifically requiring a single brand of rum. Gosling Brothers filed the trademark for Dark 'n' Stormy in the United States in 1991, establishing a legal protection that specifies Goslings Black Seal rum as the authentic base — a requirement enforced commercially and communicated on Gosling's bottles and marketing. Gosling Brothers has been present in Bermuda since 1806 when Ambrose Gosling arrived from England as a wine and spirits merchant; the rum brand that became Black Seal developed through the 19th and early 20th centuries from blending barrels of rum imported from Barbados, Trinidad, and Jamaica and aged in Bermuda's salt air environment. Barritt's Bermuda Stone Ginger Beer, first produced in 1874, is the ginger beer most historically associated with the drink, and many purists consider the Barritt's-and-Gosling's combination the only authentic version. The sailing community that has gathered around Bermuda for the Newport Bermuda Race (first held in 1906) and other transatlantic sailing events established the drink's specific nautical identity, and Dark 'n' Stormy remains the unofficial beverage of international offshore sailing culture.
