The Figgy Pudding Cocktail takes its cultural reference from the festive British Christmas carol We Wish You a Merry Christmas, which dates in its earliest documented form to the 16th century in the West Country of England and includes the insistent demand: bring us a figgy pudding. The figgy pudding of the carol is a steamed suet-and-dried-fruit pudding — a dense, spiced British Christmas confection made from figs, dates, raisins, suet, flour, and eggs, similar to the Christmas pudding that became a Victorian holiday fixture after Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha popularized German Christmas traditions at the English court in the 1840s. The preparation is traditionally soaked in brandy and set alight before serving — a visual presentation whose flaming blue brandy flame is the direct culinary ancestor of the Café Brûlot's cocktail theater. The cocktail built around this cultural reference combines brandy — the spirit most associated with the pudding's own flaming service — with fig liqueur or concentrated fig syrup, warming baking spices including cinnamon and nutmeg, and a sweetener, producing a drink that carries the same concentrated dried-fruit and spice aromatics as the dessert. The seasonal cocktail menu tradition that drove its development — bartenders creating holiday-specific drinks themed around Christmas flavors and references — accelerated significantly through the 2000s as craft cocktail culture embraced seasonal and narrative drink design.
