📜 History

The Frangelico Sour is a modern adaptation of the classic sour cocktail formula, substituting hazelnut liqueur for the more common whiskey or amaretto base. Inspired by the Amaretto Sour's popularity in the 1970s, the hazelnut sour format emerged as bartenders explored Italian liqueurs through the 2000s and 2010s. The sour's structure of spirit, citrus, and sweetener pairs naturally with the rich, warm character of hazelnut liqueur, which is traditionally produced in the Piedmont region of northern Italy from locally harvested hazelnuts, coffee, cocoa, and vanilla. The egg white gives the cocktail a luxurious foam that has made it a staple of after-dinner menus in Italian-influenced bars.
