Jello shots trace their earliest documented history to the 1950s naval culture, where food writer Tom Lehrer reportedly developed an early version to circumvent alcohol restrictions on military bases by suspending vodka in gelatin. The format was popularized commercially in American party culture during the 1980s. The grape flavor — one of Jell-O's original flavors since the brand's founding in Le Roy, New York in 1897 — became one of the most beloved jello shot varieties because the artificial grape flavor of the gelatin pairs particularly well with vodka's neutral spirit character. Grape jello shots became a fixture of college parties, backyard barbecues, and casual outdoor gatherings throughout the 1990s and 2000s, valued for their ease of preparation, low cost, and the way the gelatin format allowed them to be made ahead in large batches.
