History & Origin

Jack and Coke is among the most ordered cocktail combinations in the world, a two-ingredient highball that built its global standing on the complementary relationship between Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey and Coca-Cola. Jack Daniel's was established in Lynchburg, Tennessee by Jasper Newton Jack Daniel, who registered the distillery with the federal government in 1866, making it the oldest registered distillery in the United States. The spirit is classified as Tennessee Whiskey rather than bourbon under the federal Standards of Identity, distinguished by the Lincoln County Process: before barreling, the new spirit is filtered slowly through at least ten feet of maple charcoal, a step that mellows the whiskey's character and produces a noticeably smoother, slightly sweeter flavor profile than unfiltered Kentucky bourbon. Coca-Cola, invented by Atlanta pharmacist John Stith Pemberton in 1886 and first bottled and distributed nationally in the 1890s, became the world's best-known commercial soft drink within decades. The combination of the two was already common in the American South through the mid-20th century, but Jack Daniel's international marketing campaigns from the 1980s and 1990s — built on imagery of Tennessee craftsmanship, authenticity, and American heritage — transformed the Jack and Coke into a globally recognized shorthand for American whiskey drinking. Jack Daniel's Tennessee Whiskey has consistently ranked as one of the best-selling American whiskey brands in the world by volume.
