History & Origin

Limoncello has been produced along the Amalfi Coast, the Sorrento Peninsula, and the island of Capri in the Campania region of southern Italy since at least the early 20th century, with multiple families in the towns of Minori, Positano, and Sorrento claiming to hold the original recipe. The liqueur is made by macerating the zest of sfusato amalfitano or Sorrento lemons — protected IGP-designated varieties prized for their thick, oil-rich peel and intense floral aroma — in neutral spirit and combining the infusion with sugar and water. The result is intensely yellow, sweet-tart, and suffused with the particular citrus character of the Amalfi lemon that no lemon from elsewhere can replicate. Italy granted limoncello a Denominazione di Origine Protetta status for production in the four regions of Campania, Liguria, Sardinia, and Sicily, though Amalfi and Sorrento producers remain the most widely recognized internationally. The Limoncello Spritz emerged as a modern iteration in the 2010s, when the spritz format — base ingredient over ice in a wine glass, extended with sparkling wine and soda — spread from its Veneto origins into a global template that bartenders applied to everything from Aperol to Campari to regional Italian liqueurs. The Limoncello Spritz found its natural constituency in seaside Italian resort towns where the heat, the lemon groves, and the outdoor aperitivo culture converged, and the drink's spread beyond Italy was driven by tourism, Italian restaurant culture, and the broader international appetite for aperitivo-style drinking.
