The Madras is named after the vibrant colors of Madras fabric from Chennai, India. As a variation of the Cape Codder, it adds orange juice to create a beautiful color gradient. The drink gained popularity alongside other vodka-cranberry cocktails during the 1970s-80s cocktail boom.
