Maracujá Mule

  • 2 ozcachaca
  • 2 ozpassion fruit juice
  • 4 ozginger beer
  • ½ ozfresh lime juice
  • Lime wedge and mint spriggarnish
Instructions
  1. 1Fill a highball glass or copper mug with ice cubes.
  2. 2Add the cachaça and passion fruit juice.
  3. 3Squeeze in the fresh lime juice.
  4. 4Top with cold ginger beer and stir briefly from the bottom up.
  5. 5Garnish with a lime wedge and mint sprig. Serve immediately.

The Maracujá Mule is a Brazilian adaptation of one of the most successfully templated cocktails of the 20th century — the Moscow Mule, created in 1941 in Hollywood, California through a marketing collaboration between John G. Martin of Heublein spirits and Jack Morgan of the Cock 'n' Bull bar, designed to promote both Smirnoff vodka and Morgan's house ginger beer. The Mule's formula — spirit, ginger beer, and citrus — proved so broadly applicable that it generated dozens of national and regional variants: the Mexican Mule substitutes tequila, the Kentucky Mule substitutes bourbon, the Dark and Stormy adapts the structure for Bermudian black rum. The Maracujá Mule substitutes cachaça for vodka and replaces the standard lime with passion fruit — maracujá in Portuguese — bringing two specifically Brazilian elements into an American framework. Passion fruit is one of Brazil's most culturally significant tropical fruits, grown extensively across the country's tropical and subtropical zones and consumed daily in juice form in Brazilian households. Its intensely aromatic juice, produced from the pulp surrounding the seeds of Passiflora edulis, provides an acidity and a tropical complexity that interact with ginger beer's root-spice heat more dynamically than plain lime citrus, the passion fruit's exotic fruit notes amplifying rather than simply providing the sour element. The result extends the Mule format's refreshing effervescence into genuinely tropical territory.
