History & Origin

The Mexican 55 is a tequila variation on the French 75 — the sparkling wine, citrus, and spirit cocktail whose documented origins trace to World War I France and whose name references the French Canon de 75 modèle 1897, the field artillery gun whose 75-millimeter caliber and revolutionary recoil mechanism made it the most effective light artillery piece of its era. The French 75 — gin or cognac, fresh lemon juice, sugar, and champagne — appeared in print in multiple cocktail guides through the 1920s and 1930s, with Harry MacElhone at Harry's New York Bar in Paris among the bartenders most associated with its popularization. The Mexican 55 substitutes blanco tequila for the traditional gin, applying Mexico's most internationally recognized spirit to the French format's three-element structure of spirit, acid, and sparkling wine effervescence. Blanco tequila's clean, herbaceous, agave-forward character engages with fresh lemon or lime juice and sparkling wine in a way that is lighter and more botanically aromatic than gin's own botanical complexity, producing a fresher, more citrus-dominant result. The substitution reflects the systematic early 21st-century craft cocktail movement practice of testing established European cocktail templates across different base spirits to discover new flavor relationships.
