The Mudslide is most consistently traced to the Wreck Bar at the Rum Point Club on Grand Cayman island in the Cayman Islands during the 1970s, where a bartender improvised the drink using the ingredients at hand: vodka, Kahlua, and Baileys Irish Cream. Baileys, launched in 1974 as the world's first commercial Irish cream liqueur, was still a novelty when the Mudslide was reportedly created, and its combination with vodka and Kahlua produced an unexpectedly rich, dessert-quality cocktail. TGI Fridays popularized a frozen blended ice cream version during the 1980s and 1990s, transforming the Mudslide from a beach specialty into one of America's most recognized dessert cocktails. The Mudslide's name references the earthen color of the coffee-cream combination and the irresistible momentum of a drink that slides down easily despite its considerable richness.
