History & Origin

The NA Kentucky Mule is a non-alcoholic adaptation of the Kentucky Mule — itself a bourbon-forward variation on the Moscow Mule that substitutes Kentucky straight bourbon for the original's vodka in the ginger beer and lime format. The Moscow Mule was created in 1941 in Hollywood, California by John G. Martin and Jack Morgan to promote Smirnoff vodka and Morgan's Cock 'n' Bull ginger beer. The Kentucky adaptation emerged naturally as bourbon's American cultural identity made it a natural substitute in regional bar culture, with ginger beer's spice providing an equally complementary foil to bourbon's caramel and grain character as it did to vodka's neutrality. The non-alcoholic version follows the same structural logic as the alcoholic Kentucky Mule but replaces bourbon with a non-alcoholic whiskey substitute — most commonly Ritual Zero Proof American Whiskey Alternative, Lyre's American Malt, or Spiritless Kentucky 74, each of which attempts to replicate bourbon's vanilla and caramel flavor through botanical and flavor extract formulation. The Moscow Mule's specific combination of ginger, lime, and a cold copper mug is particularly forgiving of spirit substitution because the format's refreshment comes primarily from the ginger beer and citrus, making it one of the most naturally successful NA adaptation formats.
