History & Origin

The Negroni Sbagliato traces its origins to Bar Basso on Via Plinio in Milan, one of the city's most storied aperitivo establishments. Mirko Stocchetto, a Venetian-born bartender who had trained at Harry's Bar in Venice and worked in the grand hotel bars of Cortina before moving to Milan, took over the bar from its founder Giuseppe Basso in 1967. The story of the drink's creation — whether accident or design — centers on a Negroni ordered during a busy service: reaching for gin, Stocchetto's hand found prosecco in its place. Rather than discard the mistake, he served it. The resulting drink was lighter, more effervescent, and distinctly more aperitivo in character than the original equal-parts classic. He named it sbagliato, the Italian word for mistaken. The year is debated — some accounts say 1968, while Maurizio Stocchetto, Mirko's son and successor at Bar Basso, has stated on record that the fateful pour happened in 1972. The drink remained a beloved Milan local secret for decades before exploding globally in October 2022, when a TikTok clip featuring actors Emma D'Arcy and Olivia Cooke from HBO's House of the Dragon went viral. This punch version scales the same bittersweet, effervescent pleasure of the Sbagliato into a large-format sharing bowl suited to Italian-style standing parties.
