History & Origin

The Nightcap Old Fashioned was developed by Three Spirit Drinks as a signature serve for their Nightcap functional elixir — one of three non-alcoholic botanical spirits produced by the British company founded in 2018 by Mel Mansour, Tom Maddocks, and Rhodri Evans. Three Spirit Nightcap is formulated with herbs and adaptogens traditionally associated with relaxation and sleep: ashwagandha (Withania somnifera, an Ayurvedic adaptogen used in Indian herbal medicine for over three thousand years), valerian root (Valeriana officinalis, whose sedative properties have been documented in European herbalism since the second century CE), lemon balm (Melissa officinalis, a mint-family herb used for anxiety and sleep since at least the Middle Ages), hops (Humulus lupulus, the same plant used in beer brewing, whose female cones contain compounds with documented relaxation effects), and turmeric. The Old Fashioned framework — spirit, bitters, and a garnish expressing the spirit's aromatic character — translates directly to the functional non-alcoholic context: the Nightcap elixir's herbal complexity performs the role of the whiskey, botanical bitters provide the aromatic counterpoint, and a garnish of orange peel or cherry provides the sensory finish. The resulting preparation functions as a sophisticated end-of-evening drink whose intended effect is genuinely relaxing.
