History & Origin

The Panama Cocktail is a pre-Prohibition dessert drink that places its cultural reference precisely in the decade when the Panama Canal transformed both global commerce and American national self-perception. The canal — connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans across the Isthmus of Panama — was one of the most ambitious engineering projects in human history, begun by France under Ferdinand de Lesseps in 1881, abandoned in 1889 after enormous cost and loss of life from yellow fever and malaria, taken over by the United States under the direction of President Theodore Roosevelt, and completed on August 15, 1914. The canal's completion was celebrated as a triumph of American engineering and will, and the name Panama appeared on consumer products, cocktails, hats, and commercial ventures across the country in the years surrounding its opening. The cocktail formula — brandy with dark crème de cacao and cream — belongs to the Alexander family of cream cocktails: the Brandy Alexander (brandy, crème de cacao, cream) is the most famous expression of this structure, which was documented under that name in the early 1920s. The Panama Cocktail's simple three-ingredient formula predates the Brandy Alexander's canonical status by several years, suggesting it may represent an earlier version of the same structural idea. The dark crème de cacao's chocolate and vanilla provide the dessert character, and the cream softens the brandy's fruit into a rich, after-dinner drink.
