📜 History
Vincenzo Errico created the Red Hook at Milk & Honey in New York City in 2003, naming it after the Brooklyn waterfront neighborhood. The cocktail substitutes Punt e Mes—an intensely bitter Italian vermouth—for standard sweet vermouth in the Manhattan template, then adds maraschino liqueur for subtle sweetness and complexity. The result is more bitter and assertive than a standard Manhattan but beautifully balanced. The Red Hook, along with the Greenpoint and Little Italy, established the "Brooklyn neighborhood cocktail" category and demonstrated how small vermouth substitutions could create dramatically different drinks. It remains a favorite among bartenders who appreciate bitter, complex stirred cocktails.
