History & Origin

The Safe Sex on the Beach is the non-alcoholic version of the 1987 Florida original — created by Ted Pizio during a DeKuyper Peachtree Schnapps promotional contest — that maintains the cocktail's tropical fruit flavor while removing both the vodka and the peach schnapps. The provocation of the original cocktail's name translates effectively to the mocktail version: ordering a "Safe Sex on the Beach" generates the same double-take and conversation as the alcoholic original, making the name choice a retained social function even in the non-alcoholic context. The drink substitutes peach nectar for the schnapps, maintaining the distinctive peachy sweetness, and combines it with orange juice, cranberry juice, and grenadine for the same vivid tropical color and fruit-forward flavor as the full cocktail version.
