The Scotch Julep applies the Mint Julep's foundational structure — spirit, fresh mint, sugar, and crushed ice — to Scotch whisky, exploring how the format's aromatics shift when the traditional Kentucky bourbon base is replaced with Scotland's grain-and-malt spirit. The Mint Julep is documented in American literature as early as 1803, when John Davis described Virginians drinking a dram of spirituous liquor with mint in it in the morning, and the format was well-established in Virginia and the broader American South before bourbon became its definitive base through the mid-19th century. The Mint Julep became specifically associated with the Kentucky Derby through the early 20th century, with Woodford Reserve serving as the official bourbon since 1999. Scotch whisky's engagement with fresh mint follows a different aromatic logic than bourbon's: bourbon's caramel, vanilla, and corn sweetness amplifies mint's cool freshness in a complementary sweetness-and-cool pairing, while Scotch's grain complexity and the smoke of peated expressions provides a warmer, more resinous background against which the mint reads more sharply. Lightly peated or unpeated blended Scotch produces a gentler result, while Islay expressions create a dramatic contrast between the smoke and the herb.
