History & Origin

The Serendipity cocktail draws together three of France's most historically significant regional spirits, each carrying centuries of production tradition from a different corner of the country. Cognac is the benchmarked French brandy, produced in the Charente and Charente-Maritime departments from grapes grown in a precisely defined appellation area around the town of Cognac, distilled in copper pot stills and aged in Limousin or Tronçais oak casks. The name has been legally protected as an appellation since 1909, and the region's chalky soil and humid maritime climate create a flavor profile — dried fruits, toasted almonds, vanilla, and subtle spice — that no other brandy fully replicates. Calvados comes from Normandy in northwestern France, where cider and apple orchards have defined the landscape since at least the 16th century. Distilled from fermented apple cider and aged in oak, it carries the bright orchard freshness of the apple alongside the wood-derived complexity that maturation adds. Chartreuse is perhaps the most storied: a herbal liqueur produced by Carthusian monks at the Grande Chartreuse monastery in the Chartreuse Mountains of the French Alps since 1737, using a secret formula of 130 botanicals that only two monks know in full at any given time. Green Chartreuse at 55% ABV and Yellow Chartreuse at 40% are the two primary expressions. Bringing these three together in a single cocktail is an act of French regional cartography — the vineyards of Cognac, the orchards of Normandy, and the alpine herbs of Chartreuse in one glass.
