History & Origin

The Starry Night shot is named for the visual effect produced when its two primary ingredients meet in the glass: Goldschläger's genuine 24-karat gold leaf flakes, suspended in its cinnamon base, catch the light against the dark backdrop of Jägermeister and briefly appear to float like stars against a night sky. Goldschläger is a Swiss cinnamon schnapps whose gold-flake inclusion is a deliberate aesthetic choice with a long decorative precedent — gold leaf has been used in both food and drink preparation throughout European history, most famously in the Danziger Goldwasser liqueur that has been produced in Poland and Germany since the 16th century. The gold flakes in Goldschläger are genuine but too fine to contribute any flavor; their sole function is the shimmer. Jägermeister has been produced in Wolfenbüttel, Lower Saxony since the recipe was developed in 1934 by Curt Mast and production launched in 1935. Its formula of 56 herbs, fruits, roots, and spices includes saffron, ginger, juniper berries, anise, and citrus peel, matured in oak for a year before bottling. The combination of Jägermeister's dense herbal depth with Goldschläger's high-heat cinnamon sweetness creates a warming contrast shot that became a staple at ski lodges and cold-weather bars in the 1990s. The visual presentation — swirling gold against dark amber — elevates the novelty factor and makes the Starry Night one of the more photogenic of the era's shooting star drinks.
