History & Origin

The Strawberry Caipirinha — Caipifruta de Morango in Brazilian Portuguese — is one of the most widely ordered fruit caipirinha variations, applying Brazil's national cocktail format to fresh strawberries with results that are immediately appealing to drinkers of all experience levels. The caipifruta tradition developed naturally from Brazil's deeply embedded fresh-juice culture: a country where vendedores de suco (juice vendors) and casas de sucos (juice houses) blend fresh tropical and seasonal fruit with ice daily for millions of consumers developed a cocktail culture that simply applied the same fresh-fruit logic to cachaça. Strawberries have been commercially grown in Brazil's cooler highland regions since the mid-20th century, with the municipalities of Atibaia and Jundiaí in São Paulo state and the Serra Gaúcha region of Rio Grande do Sul becoming the country's primary production centers. The preparation follows the Caipirinha's foundational technique — fruit muddled directly in the glass with sugar to release both juice and the aromatic compounds from the berry's skin, before cachaça is added and the whole mixed with ice — rather than using pre-squeezed juice. The direct muddling produces a drink with texture, skin oils, and the seeds' minor visual contrast, connecting the cocktail to the fruit more completely than any blended or strained version could. Cachaça's fresh-cane grassiness and the strawberry's sweet berry acid create a combination whose Brazilian character is immediately identifiable.
