The Valencia Cocktail places its name on one of the most iconic citrus-producing regions in the world. Valencia, the capital of the Valencian Community on Spain's Mediterranean coast, gave its name to the Valencia orange — the late-season, thin-skinned orange variety cultivated in California and Florida that became the dominant American fresh-squeezed juice orange of the 20th century. The Valencia orange arrived in California in the 1870s, introduced by William Wolfskill and others, and the California citrus industry built around it became one of the state's most significant agricultural enterprises. The cocktail's formula — apricot brandy with orange juice and orange bitters — creates a double orange experience that honors its namesake city's agricultural identity. Apricot brandy's benzaldehyde aromatics — the same compound that gives almonds their flavor and that defines the character of stone fruit spirits generally — interact with fresh orange juice's citric sweetness and orange bitters' dried peel bitterness in a combination that is fruit-forward, light-bodied, and naturally suited to aperitif service.
