History & Origin

The Vampiro — vampire in Spanish — is a Mexican tomato-based tequila cocktail that functions as Mexico's answer to the Bloody Mary, combining tequila with tomato juice or Clamato (the clamato juice blending tomato juice with clam broth produced commercially by Mott's since 1966), fresh orange juice, lime juice, and hot sauce. The blood-red color of the tomato base and the drink's assertive, savory-spicy character justify the name. Clamato became a particularly popular cocktail ingredient in northern Mexico and border regions through the second half of the 20th century, where the specific combination of tomato's richness, clam broth's umami depth, and the chili heat of hot sauce created a flavor profile distinct from American tomato-juice cocktail traditions. The Vampiro represents the broader Mexican tradition of savory cocktails — including the Michelada and the Chelada — that combine carbonated or acidic beverages with chili, salt, and citrus in ways that blur the boundary between drink and food. The drink is particularly associated with casual outdoor drinking culture in Jalisco, Sonora, and the border states, where it is sold at street stands alongside other tequila-based casual preparations.
