The Whisky Mac is attributed to General Sir Hector 'Fighting Mac' MacDonald, a Scottish-born British Army officer who served during the campaigns of the British Raj in India. According to tradition, MacDonald created the drink around 1899 while stationed in India, combining blended Scotch whisky with green ginger wine — then popular among officers for its perceived medicinal properties against cholera and digestive complaints. Stone's Original Green Ginger Wine, produced by the Finsbury Distillery since 1740, became the traditional mixer. The Whisky Mac — an affectionate shortening of 'Whisky MacDonald' — became a staple of British pubs, especially in winter months when its warming combination provides comfort against cold and damp. It remains associated with outdoor pursuits including hunting, shooting, and golf, earning the informal nickname 'The Golfers' Drink.' The drink experienced a craft bar revival in the late 2010s.
