History & Origin

The Apple Toddy is one of the oldest distinctly American hot cocktails, drawing on the intersection of two deep Colonial traditions: the hot toddy format imported from Britain and Ireland, and the apple spirit culture native to the American Northeast. Hot toddies — spirit, hot water, sweetener, and sometimes citrus or spice — were documented in American tavern culture from the 18th century as both social drinks and folk remedies for colds and respiratory ailments. The belief in whiskey and brandy toddies as cold remedies was widespread enough that physicians routinely prescribed them, and the format remained a practical staple of pre-industrial American homes where heating large spaces was difficult and hot spirits served genuine thermogenic purposes. Apple brandy — distilled from hard cider and produced primarily in New Jersey, New England, and the mid-Atlantic states where apple orchards were abundant — was among the most widely available domestic spirits in colonial and early republican America. The Laird family of New Jersey has documented records of apple brandy production dating to 1698, and George Washington reportedly requested Robert Laird's recipe. The apple toddy's flavor — apple fruit warmed by the spirit and sweetened with honey or maple syrup, lifted by lemon and warmed by cinnamon — is one of the most naturally evocative combinations of American seasonal cooking and drinking, concentrated into a single hot glass.
