History & Origin

The Beal's Cocktail is a pre-World War II Scotch whisky preparation documented in Drinks, published in 1914, and subsequently appearing in the 1935 Mr. Boston Official Bartender's Guide — one of the most widely distributed American cocktail manuals of the mid-20th century, first published by Glenmore Distilleries in 1935 as a promotional guide. The drink combines Scotch whisky with equal parts dry French vermouth and sweet Italian vermouth, placing it in the Perfect Manhattan structural category where the dual vermouth split creates an intermediate character between the sweetness of straight sweet vermouth and the dryness of straight dry vermouth. This construction distinguishes the Beal's from the closely related Beadlestone Cocktail, which uses only dry vermouth with Scotch, making the Beadlestone drier and more austere and the Beal's more rounded and herbal. The equal-parts vermouth construction in the Beal's gives neither vermouth style a dominant role, allowing the Scotch's grain and peat character to remain the primary flavor while both vermouths contribute their respective herbal dimensions — the Italian sweet vermouth's spice-and-vanilla warmth alongside the French dry vermouth's more astringent herb-and-citrus profile — in a complementary balance.
