The Butterscotch Russian is a variation of the White Russian — created when Gustave Tops added cream to the Black Russian cocktail he invented in Brussels in 1949 — that replaces some or all of the coffee liqueur with butterscotch schnapps. Butterscotch schnapps became commercially viable through brands like DeKuyper Buttershots, launched in the 1990s, which made the concentrated caramelized-butter-and-sugar flavor available to bars in a convenient, shelf-stable form. The substitution transforms the coffee-forward character of the White Russian into a caramel-sweet dessert experience, creating a cocktail that recalls candy rather than coffee. This style of dessert variation on classic templates was popular during the late 1990s and 2000s, when the expanding range of flavored schnapps gave bartenders tools for reinterpreting established drinks.
