History & Origin

The Flatliner Shot is a confrontational party shooter combining tequila, Sambuca, and Tabasco hot sauce — three maximally assertive flavor elements whose simultaneous presence creates a sensory experience of unusual intensity. The name references the flatline of a cardiac monitor, evoking the shot's intended incapacitating effect on the drinker in the hyperbolic language typical of extreme-flavor dare shots. Tabasco, produced by the McIlhenny Company on Avery Island in Louisiana since 1868 using a formula developed by Edmund McIlhenny that combines tabasco pepper mash with Avery Island salt and distilled white vinegar, aged in white oak barrels, provides the capsaicin-driven burn that activates the TRPV1 heat receptor. Sambuca — the Italian anise liqueur most commonly associated with Molinari, produced in Civitavecchia since 1945, and Luxardo, whose product dates to 1851 — contributes its concentrated star anise essential oil (anethole) character to the combination. The simultaneous activation of heat receptors from capsaicin, the anise aromatic's intensity, and tequila's agave-and-spirit warmth creates three distinct simultaneous sensory events that the dare-shot genre of the 1990s specifically valued as proof of tolerance.
