History & Origin

The Froupe Cocktail is a Prohibition-era brandy drink combining cognac, sweet vermouth, and Bénédictine in proportions that produce a richly herbal, spirit-forward aperitif. The name's etymology is not firmly established in the historical record — it does not correspond to a known French, English, or Italian word with an obvious cocktail connection — though the drink appears in multiple mid-20th-century bartending references as a recognized preparation. Bénédictine D.O.M., produced in Fécamp in the Normandy region of France, was first commercially produced by wine merchant Alexandre Le Grand in 1863, who claimed to have rediscovered a formula originally created by Benedictine monk Dom Bernardo Vincelli at the Abbey of Fécamp in 1510. While historians regard the 16th-century origin as a marketing construction rather than documented history, the liqueur itself is genuine and genuinely complex: a blend of 27 herbs and spices including angelica, hyssop, lemon balm, juniper, myrrh, and saffron, aged in oak barrels, and producing a sweet, warming, herbal flavor with notes of honey, citrus, and aromatic wood. The combination of cognac, sweet vermouth, and Bénédictine in the Froupe creates a drink with three layers of herbal and fruit complexity — the cognac's stone fruit and barrel character, the vermouth's botanicals and sweetness, and Bénédictine's concentrated herb mixture — producing a contemplative digestif of considerable depth.
